Lempikirja – Bookbinding and paper dolls
Welcome to the website of Lempikirja Bookbindery!
Lempikirja Bookbindery operates out of Turku, Finland. The company was founded in 2008; I am a specialist in traditional book binding by hand. I bind single volume books and short print runs, and my services include the renovation and re-binding of old books, binding of annual volumes of magazines and serial publications, and the publications of self-publishers’ literary works (“vanity publishing”). I also undertake unique gift binding that is customised to clients’ wishes, such as diaries and guest books, albums and scrap books, as well as various kindsof storage cases and folders.
Lempikirja also produces a family of paper dolls, which were born out of my own interest in the fashions of the past few decades. Presenting their wardrobes on paper sheets are my female dolls, Mandi, Helmi, Katri, Iiris and Viola, and the young men who court them, Lasse and Eerik. Even though the characters are entirely fictional, they represent accurately the fashion and beliefs of their own era. It was important to me to maintain creative freedom whilst remaining true to the period.
I also design and draw paper dolls to order; a customised paper doll with accessories could be a suitable corporate gift for a company in the clothing trade. For example, in 2009 I created an imaginary character, Mrs Ilmi Ölander, a secretary who wore a 1951 outfit, and Sigrid (Sissi) Serlachius, the youngest daughter of an industrial magnate, as a 16-year old young lady in 1894. These paper dolls were produced to order for the G. A. Serlachius Museum in Mänttä, Finland.
